Recycling Household Hazardous Waste

Please use the main Highway 59 Landfill entrance, and a) pull onto the scale if you have other materials that you will be dumping, or b) pull into the diagonal parking lines if you will be dropping off only have the items listed below. For both "a" and "b", please go to the front window of the green "scale house" and tell the scale house attendant which materials you have in your vehicle, including how much you of each item (listed below) you intend to drop off.  The attendant will issue you a receipt for the items you have, and you can then proceed to the regular landfill area to drop the items (listed below) off with our "spotter," who will make sure the items are separated correctly.


The Highway 59 Landfill accepts only these household hazardous waste items during regular operating hours at no cost from residents:

  • Antifreeze (up to 5 gallons per day)
  • Batteries (household and automotive; up to 40 pounds per day)
  • Electronic Devices (including TV's, computers, printers, phones, charging cords, etc.)
  • Fluorescent light tubes/bulbs and CFLs (up to 8 lights; lights must be delivered intact, not broken.)
  • Liquid paint (must be in the original container; up to 15 gallons per day; based on container size, not on how much is left in the can)
  • Mercury-containing thermostats
  • Used motor oil (up to 5 gallons per day) and used oil filters (up to 5 per day)

Billy Wright Landfill | 17173 South Billy Wright Road, Los Banos, CA 93635

Please: a) pull up to the scale if you have other materials that need to be dumped, tell the scale house attendant which materials you will be dumping and which of the items (listed below) that you have and how much of each.  Then place the items (listed below) onto the dolly and proceed with your load to the appropriate area of the facility. You will then weigh-out after dumping. Or, b) pull to the side of the red scale house if you have only the items listed below.  At the front scale house window, please let the scale house attendant know which of the items (listed below) you have and how much of each item you have.  The attendant will print out a receipt and then you may place these items on the dolly outside of the scalehouse.
